Een algemeen probleem met software-patenten is dat ze vaak een te breed technisch gebied monopoliseren en dat ze vrijwel altijd triviaal zijn. In dit geval gaat het om het concept van scannen van virussen op de poorten, iets uitermate voor de hand liggends wat iedere virusscanner doet. Normaal worden software-patenten defensief gebruikt maar Trend Micro gebruikt het op aggresieve wijze en heeft in het verleden diverse organisaties waaronder Symantec en McAffee afgeperst en nu dus ook gebruikers.

Voor Vrijschrift is dit voldoende reden om een boycott af te roepen over Trend Micro. Vrijschrift-voorzitter Wiebe van der Worp: "Trend Micro gaat op een afschuwlijke wijze ver over de grenzen van fatsoen. Het is absoluut onaanvaardbaar wat hier gebeurt, het Amerikaanse rechtssysteem wordt simpelweg misbruikt door op een laffe manier eindgebruikers te beschuldigen en dit moet afgestraft worden. Dit mag geen tendens worden." Om de boycott kracht bij te zetten heeft Vrijschrift op haar site banners beschikbaar gesteld.
